Field Trips

Luykas Van Alen House

(K-12—tour content adapted to grade level and classroom needs)

    -This tour may be offered in conjunction with the Ichabod Crane School house

    -As they tour the 1737 Luykas Van Alen farm house, students learn about Dutch settlement of New York and life on a Dutch farm in the 18th century. 

    -Social Studies Standard 1, The Arts Standards 3 & 4, ELA Standards 1 &3, MST Standard 5.

-$3 per student, but contact CCHS for information on combined visits to other CCHS sites. (The Van Alen House site is open for tours in the Spring and Fall season only.)

 

 

Ichabod Crane School House

(K-12- tour content adapted to grade level and classroom needs)

-This tour may be offered in conjunction with the Van Alen House.

-While immersed in the environment of a one-room school house, students learn about early education in Columbia County by participating in lessons in arithmetic, grammar, and handwriting.

-Social Studies Standard 1, The Arts Standard 3, ELA Standards 1 &3, MST Standard 3.

-$3 per student, but contact CCHS for information on combined visits to other CCHS sites. (The Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse is open for tours in the Spring and Fall season only.)

 

 

A Visit to Columbia County in the Civil War

(K-12- tour content adapted to grade level and classroom needs)

-This tour may be offered in conjunction with visits to other CCHS sites- speak with an educator for details.

-Bring your students to view the exhibition Columbia County in the Civil War, which explores the involvement of Columbia County citizens in the war, on the home front and the battlefield.  The museum educator can focus on particular objects in the exhibit to fit your curriculum needs.  This exhibition is split between two buildings, the Columbia County Museum and the House of History (James Vanderpoel House). 

-Social Studies Standards 1 & 3, The Arts Standard 4, ELA Standards 1 & 3

-$3 per student, but contact CCHS for information on combined visits to other CCHS sites.

 

 

Class Outing/Field Day

-The grounds of the Luykas Van Alen House/Ichabod Crane School house provide the ideal setting for an end of the year field trip.  Picnic on the grounds (carry-in, carry-out), do some sketching of the historic structures, or make use of our historic games (hoop and stick, the game of graces, etc.).

-Health & Physical Education Standard 1.

 In-School Programs

A Visit from Ms. Carrie Niles, of Spencertown, NY

(Can be adapted for grades 3-12) (Offered beginning in April 2011)

-Having formed friendships with many students studying at Spencertown Academy, Ms. Carrie Niles received letters from many young men who served in the Union Army during the Civil War.  Their letters reveal aspects of army life, as well as their longing for home.  A CCHS educator will visit your school, dressed in period costume, and will talk about life on the home front and read selections from the letters.

This program is offered in two versions:

-Classroom- a more interactive version, students will converse with Carrie, be

 able to examine reproductions of letters sent to her, and have more opportunity to  ask questions. 40-60 minutes, 2 classes may be combined per session. $25 per session or $100 per day (up to 5 per day).

-Assembly- Carrie will read sections of the letters and talk about life on the home front, but session is less interactive. 30-40 minute assembly, $200

 

 

What is a Print?

(Grades K-6)

-This lesson serves as an introduction to printmaking.  Students will learn what a print is, and discuss the printed objects that surround them in their classroom.  They will look at some examples of a variety of materials with printed designs or words.  Finally, they will experience printmaking firsthand, making foam prints (younger students) or linoleum cut prints (older students).

-Program taught by CCHS educatorr.

-1 class period

-$3 per student.

 

Making a Sampler

(4th grade, may be adapted to other grades/classes studying primary source research or sewing skills)

-Students will learn to be a detective and look at primary sources, through observation and discussion of samplers and other textiles from the CCSH collections.  They will get to experience needlework hands-on as they create their own mini-sampler. 

-Program taught by CCHS educator.

-1-2 class periods.

-$3 per student.

Historic Games

(Grades 1-5)

-Students will learn about the ways American children have played throughout history, then try out forgotten games and past-times such as the hoop and stick and game of graces. 

-Program taught by CCHS educators.
