Refinement, Symmetry & Beauty | Federal Style in America
Our forthcoming exhibition, "  and featuring paintings, textiles and decorative arts from the CCHS Permanent Collection in conjunction with our Celebration of the Bicentennial of James Vanderpoel House.

America's newly-founded nation beamed with patriotism following its victory in the Revolutionary War. The original foundations of the United States government and culture immediately following its independence is known as the Federal Era (1780-1830).

George Washington and other American icons looked toward the Classical ages of Greece and Rome in forging an identity for the young American Republic through architecture, furniture, textiles, ceramics and works of art.

Neoclassical designs and motifs are distinguished through simple yet refined lines, a satisfying balance of symmetry and overall elegance that signals strength and democracy.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, France underwent a revolution of its own; England adjusted to the new independence of its former American colonies, and archaeological discoveries from the ancients were on the rise, causing a ripple effect throughout Europe.

Seeking a democratic sense of culture and style from Antiquity inspirations, this became known as the Regency Era (1800-1820).

In our celebration of 200 years of the James Vanderpoel House (1820-2020), we present its Federal architectural excellence along with diverse material culture representing characteristics of the Federal Style and Era in Columbia County and in America.

Early Hand Tools & Farm Implements from the CCHS Collection—
Our latest exhibition, "Early Hand Tools & Farm Implements"  and featuring Early Farm Tools in conjunction with our Farming Issue of the History & Heritage Magazine.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, in pre-industrial society, work was accomplished with hand-made tools and personal muscle power. The tools in this exhibition are representative of the agriculturally based economy of Columbia County and the every day tasks and chores of its rural inhabitants.  Family members worked together at a variety of chores to ensure the success of running a farm or family business that included agricultural production, food preparation, household care and animal husbandry. Beyond the function of each of these tools, there is a beauty in their form and manipulation of materials. These historic objects are our material culture. Sponsorship opportunities currently exist for this high-profile exhibition.

This exhibition is installed in the Museum's Main Gallery (upstairs). Several Sponsorship opportunities currently exist for this high-profile exhibition.

Delft Ware from the CCHS Collection—
Blue & White, Manganese, Polychrome Delft from the CCHS Permanent Collection. Skilled artistry of Dutch potters created their own style of pottery leading to an extensive range of tableware, vases, figurines, birdcages and tiles. Although Delftware reached its peak period from 1670 – 1730, it continued to be desirable and emulated throughout Europe well into the 19th century.

CCHS collections include the popular blue and white Delft as well as polychrome and manganese Delftware and tiles.

The exhibit is housed in the North Room of the Luykas Van Alen House  and is installed within two New York Dutch Colonial Corner Cupboards, also from the permanent collection. This exhibition is a semi-permanent installation.

Daguerreotypes and Cased Photos from the CCHS Collection
—

Silvered glass and mercury vapor photographs were among the earliest form of photography available to the public, and their popularity endured for several decades from 1840 to the late 1850s. Images produced with this method were each unique, as no negative or positive template is created in the process.

The mirror-like silver surfaces were protected by a glass top layer and usually encased within small, ornamented cases of embossed leather, velvet and presented in gilt brass mats, A rich alternative was black-lacquered cases ornamented with decorative patterns created by mother of pearl inlays.

The experience of viewing an actual Daguerreotype is akin to viewing a hologram, as the illusive imagery floats within the glass capsule.

This exhibit will be installed in the small gallery adjunct to the Museum's upstairs gallery.
