James Vanderpoel 'House of History'
16 Broad Street, Kinderhook, NY

c.1820 James Vanderpoel 'House of History'- Vanderpoel Galleries
The James Vanderpoel House contains three exhibit galleries and the museum book shop.

Set on ten acres and built during the Federal era as the home of prominent area lawyer and politician, James Vanderpoel (b. 1787) and his family, the property is now an exhibit space featuring galleries of paintings and decorative arts from the CCHS permanent collection.

 Federal Style:
America's newly-founded nation beamed with patriotism following its victory in the Revolutionary War against England. The original foundations of the United States government and culture immediately following its independence is known as the Federal Era (1780-1830).

In celebrating 200 years of the James Vanderpoel house, we present its Federal architectural excellence along with diverse material culture representing characteristics of the Federal Style and Era in Columbia County and America.

New York Portraits:

Columbia County's painted portraiture legacy spans more than three centuries of historically significant or artistically important works by both self-taught, naïve, and itinerant painters, as well as important artists of the time, and including some of the earliest works in America.

CCHS Museum Galleries
The Museum & Library building contains the primary exhibition gallery, and two smaller galleries as well as a County research library.

Early Hand Tools & Farm Implements:
During the 18th and 19th centuries, in pre-industrial society, work was accomplished with hand-made tools and personal muscle power. The tools in this exhibition represent the agriculturally-based economy of Columbia County and every day tasks and chores of its rural inhabitants. Beyond the function of each of these tools, there is a beauty in their form and manipulation of materials.

Cased Images, Daguerreotypes and Early Photographs from the CCHS Collection:
19th century Daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and tintypes represent the earliest forms of photography in America. These cased images became treasured keepsakes to be viewed and shared.
