The Columbia County Historical Society is always looking for new friends and volunteers. While opportunities can be found in most areas of CCHS operations, currently the Building & Grounds committee has a number of projects to landscape and restore the Vanderpoel House, Van Alen House and Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse.
              NEW PROJECTS INCLUDE GARDENS
Volunteers enjoy the chance to work in a friendly professional environment, gain valuable experience, and meet like-minded people who agree that preserving and sharing the history of Columbia County is a worthwhile endeavor.

Volunteers organize lectures, work in the research library or museum shop, help with CCHS mailings and other administrative projects, work with school group field trips, gallery-sit, and organize their annual holiday fundraiser, the Gallery of Wreaths.  CCHS Volunteers also receive behind-the-scenes preview tours of upcoming exhibitions, and enjoy an annual outing to an historical site or curatorial event.

Current Volunteer Openings:
  • Gardening/Painting/Maintenance—handywo/man projects.
  • Preservation Carpentry—our four historic properties require work
  • Historic Method Masonry--one of our brick structures requires work
  • General Administrative Office Help—answering phones, filing, special projects, organizing, large mailings, scanning images, assisting with membership, etc.
  • Museum Shop & Bookstore—Retail experience.
  • Education Department—help with virtual teachers' lesson plans; lead school field trips at the Luykas Van Alen House and Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse.
  • Research—our curators frequently need help with library research.
  • Curatorial Assistance—assist the curators with the permanent collections and changing exhibitions.
  • Library Research—help respond to inquiries we receive via telephone, email, and post—usually genealogical questions.
  • Event Planning and Support—if you love parties, this is the place for you.
  • Programming—Do you have a great idea for CCHS programs or lectures? Help us organize them.
